Another question I get asked a lot is, “What is the difference between a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and liposuction of the abdomen?” The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone with isolated pockets of fatty tissue surrounding the stomach area and is looking to define and contour their waist line. This is for what the gym just can’t seem to accomplish!

The ideal canidate for a tummy tuck is someone who has excess skin on their abdomen and would prefer a tighter more defined stomach. A tummy tuck removes a football shaped piece of skin and fatty tissue between the belly button and above the pubic region. The tummy tuck is for someone who has a fair to large amount of fatty tissue and loose skin. The tummy tuck is also great for addressing stretch marks—because the skin is removed and the stretch marks go with it! Whereas with liposuction only the fat is removed. But each procedure is not independent of each other, some of the best results come from a combination of the two procedures—a tummy tuck to flatten the abdomen with liposuction of the flanks to really carve out and define the waistline. That should give you some idea of what the differences are between a tummy tuck and liposuction, however the best way to know which procedure is right for you is to come in and meet with Dr. Zemmel. You will discuss what your goals are and he will offer you the procedure that best suits your needs and will help you achieve the body you have been envisioning yourself in.

There are two types of minimally invasive facial rejuvenation options that are offered at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery that do not require a surgical procedure—filler or injectables. But what is the difference? And which one is right for you?

Identifying what type of wrinkle you are trying to correct is the first step towards choosing between fillers and injectables.

Static Wrinkles can be categorized by the way they are formed, which is through gravity and folding skin. This type of wrinkle is best treated by using fillers.

Juvederm, Restylane and Prevelle are all fillers and are offered here at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery. Each has a different rate for duration—and are typically used for the best results to smooth out deep lines and groves of the face; such as laugh lines, lip stick lines, crow’s feet, and marionette lines. You can also fill in the creases under the eyelids. They work especially well for lip augmentation.

Dynamic wrinkles are the lines that form over time from your muscles contracting, the most common dynamic wrinkles are found across the top of the forehead, between the eyebrows and on the sides of the eyes. Most women would refer to their dynamic wrinkles as their “frown lines” and their “crows feet.”

Injections are what best treat dynamic wrinkles, for this we typically recommend Botox. Botox temporarily stops the muscles from contracting and smoothes out the lines and creases that are formed through facial expressions. It also has an added bonus of creating a slight brow lift when injected on the forehead lines, creating a youthful appearance by taking away wrinkles and widening the look of the eyes. (It can also stop you from sweating! Call and ask me about our underarm treatment!)

The procedures of injections and filler are both simple, quick, and painless! We give you an ice pack on the area to be treated prior to the injection, and in the case of the fillers sometimes a small amount of topical and or local anesthesia. Now, I don’t know anyone who likes needles, but I also don’t know anyone who likes wrinkles!

Breast Cancer Prevention starts with you.

Do your self-exams, get your annual mammograms, and encourage the women in your life to do the same.

I found a few facts on: http://www.breastcancerpreventionfund.org/

1 in 8 women will get breast cancer.

Every 3 minutes an American is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women age 35 to 50.

With early diagnosis, the 5-year survival rate is over 90%.

Every 12 minutes a woman dies from breast cancer; many because the breast cancer was not detected in time.

Support research locally or nationally by contributing your time to walking for the cure, or volunteer at an event. Educate yourself and others and ultimately don’t stop thinking about breast cancer just because October is over.

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery participates as an office in many events and fundraisers—and nothing feels better to us than walking right alongside the patients who feel that we have made a difference in their lives. Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is an important and personal decision. Each person has their own goals and desires for the outcome of their reconstruction, and Dr. Zemmel is here to help accomplish those goals. Whether you are planning a mastectomy, or had one in the past, call us to set up an appointment to meet Dr. Zemmel and learn more about your reconstruction options.

If you or someone you know is considering reconstruction, please visit our breast reconstruction page to learn about the different types of reconstruction offered here at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery, as well as our insurance page to understand your rights as a patient.

As many women who have had implants will tell you, this is one of the most important decisions you will make.
What do I hear the most when in a breast augmentation consult?
“I would like to be a C-cup”

While we cannot promise a cup size, we can promise to help you find the right implant to fit your body and your desired shape. The reason for this is first, everyone is built differently to begin with and your final cup size will be partially determined by your preoperative breast size. Secondly, all bras are not created equal so to speak and a “C” cup from one bra manufacturer is not necessarily the same as a “C” cup from another manufacturer.

I find that it is extremely important to listen to Dr. Zemmel and know that his experience and dedication to making you happy are what he will use to guide you through the process of choosing the size to meet your goals. He listens to you and what your desires are, while keeping in mind how you are built to begin with.

He also takes measurements that are extremely important to determining implant size-one of the most important of these measurements is the diameter your natural breast has, and finding an implant that will perfectly match the diameter of your natural breast.

A lot of women I meet are fearful of going “too big.”However, choosing an implant smaller than your natural breast shape will not provide the proper shape following the procedure. Having said that, Dr. Zemmel will not choose an implant too large for your chest that would potentially give you an unnatural appearance, or make you look out of proportion.
Although a desire for a certain cup size is helpful to Dr. Zemmel in guiding you in the selection of the proper implants, it is more helpful to focus on the shape and appearance that you wish to achieve. Our goal and the measure of our success is your happiness.
