Over the years, breast implants have undergone numerous design changes to ultimately improve the look, feel, and safety of the popular cosmetic enhancement. One of the most recent advancements that has received significant attention is Allergan’s Natrelle® Style 410 implant – also known as the “gummy bear” implant. This highly cohesive silicone gel implant has shown to provide patients with even more natural-looking and -feeling results with fewer post-operative complications.
Dr. Neil J. Zemmel has undergone specialty training for the FDA-approved Natrelle® 410 implants, studying under Dr. Charles Randquist of Stockholm, Sweden, whose breast augmentation techniques utilizing the shaped textured implants are world-renowned. In addition to Dr. Zemmel’s refined expertise with gummy bear implants, he is one of the few plastic surgeons in the region to offer the implant for cosmetic purposes.
Why are they called “Gummy Bear” implants?
Unlike other silicone gel implants, the Natrelle® 410 contains a highly cohesive silicone material (level III cohesivity) that is form-stable, causing the implant to maintain its shape. The consistency of traditional silicone implants could be compared to that of honey, but since the gel in Natrelle® 410 does not shift when the patient is in different positions, the implant has been nicknamed “gummy bear.” These breast implants were designed with more cross-linking in the structure of the silicone molecules, providing its characteristic texture.
How are Natrelle® 410 implants different?
Natrelle® 410 breast implants were designed to make up for the limitations of other cohesive implants on the market. Traditional silicone implants are more fluid, and the material shifts according to the position of the individual. This causes a decrease in upper pole fullness, making rippling more of a concern, especially in shaped implants. The anatomic (teardrop-shaped), highly cohesive nature of gummy bear implants resolves this problem. The upper pole area maintains its natural shape, even when the implant is in an upright position. In addition, the silicone shell of the Natrelle® 410 implants does not fold.
Benefits of Natrelle® 410 Implants
The unique qualities of the gummy bear breast implant have caused an increasing number of plastic surgeons and patients to seek the many benefits it offers. Due to its form-stable, teardrop-shaped anatomic features, patients undergoing a breast augmentation, reconstruction, or revision can expect the following:
- Less risk of capsular contracture
- Natural teardrop shape
- Lower rate of rippling
- Lower rupture rate
With the more natural look and feel that patients of Richmond Aesthetic Surgery achieve with Natrelle® 410 implants, Dr. Zemmel has seen overall better patient outcomes using gummy bear implants.
